Spaces like boxing and mixed martial arts gyms haven’t always been the most welcoming to the LGBTQ community. However, Red Planet MMA, located on Broadway in Bushwick, has taken a different approach. Head coach Mario Marin responded to the petitions of gay fighters at the gym and dedicated a space for LGBTQ fighters. This initiative led to the creation of the neighborhood’s very own ‘Gay Fight Club.’
The ‘Gay Fight Club’ at Red Planet MMA offers a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ individuals to learn and teach kickboxing and muay thai. The club aims to alleviate any trepidation or negative experiences that LGBTQ fighters may have encountered in the past. Daffodil Bisono, a trainer at Red Planet, emphasizes the importance of creating a community space where people can manage their emotions and engage in physical activity.
Grace Fawcett, a regular participant at the ‘Gay Fight Club,’ expresses how the experience allows them to embody their favorite fantasy characters. The individualized coaching provided by the trainers ensures that even beginners can quickly grasp the fundamentals of martial arts. The training sessions take place every Sunday from 2-3pm and are open to anyone, with a pay-what-you-wish policy.
Red Planet MMA’s commitment to inclusivity and providing a supportive environment for LGBTQ fighters is a testament to their dedication to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity in the world of combat sports.
