Jonathan Haggerty’s Next Move
Jonathan Haggerty, the newly crowned two-sport ONE world champion, is considering his next steps in his career. He is contemplating making his mixed martial arts debut or engaging in a striking superfight with Thai star Tawanchai PK Saenchai.
Haggerty, a 26-year-old British striker, recently achieved concurrent world champion status by adding the ONE bantamweight kickboxing world title to his Muay Thai gold. He knocked out the division’s MMA king Fabricio Andrade in an all-champion clash.
In an interview with the Daily Star, Haggerty expressed his interest in a rematch with Andrade for the MMA belt, as well as a clash with Tawanchai, the reigning ONE featherweight Muay Thai world champion.
Haggerty said, "The MMA belt is definitely on my mind, and Tawanchai has been on my mind quite a lot after I faced off with him [after the fight]."
If Haggerty chooses to pursue the Tawanchai fight, he will likely be watching Tawanchai’s upcoming bout next month.
Tawanchai, a 24-year-old standout from PK Saenchai Muay Thai Gym, will defend his Muay Thai world title against Superbon Singha Mawynn at ONE Friday Fights 46 on December 22 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Haggerty, who previously competed in the flyweight division, is also considering returning to the 135-pound bantamweight division while still fighting at flyweight. He believes there is unfinished business in the flyweight division and wants to take it step by step.
In May 2019, Haggerty won the Muay Thai world title in the flyweight division by defeating Sam-A Gaiyanghadao. However, he lost the title three months later to Rodtang Jitmuangnon. Haggerty then moved to bantamweight in November 2022 and captured the division’s Muay Thai strap with a first-round knockout of Nong-O Hama. He followed it up with another knockout victory over Fabricio Andrade to claim the vacant bantamweight kickboxing world title.
