UFC lightweight and former Olympian Mark O. Madsen has announced his retirement from combat sports. Madsen, who had a successful career in both wrestling and mixed martial arts, made the announcement on his Facebook page. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, confirmed the news to MMA Fighting.
Madsen expressed that the time is right for him to hang up his gloves and pursue other opportunities. He mentioned that there are exciting meetings on his calendar, but now is a time for reflection.
During his MMA career, Madsen achieved a record of 12-2. As an Olympic silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, he had notable victories over fighters such as Clay Guida and Vinc Pichel during his time in the UFC.
Madsen made his UFC debut in September 2019, where he secured a first-round TKO victory over Danilo Belluardo. He went on to win his next three fights before suffering recent losses to Jared Gordon and Grant Dawson.
In addition to his accomplishments in MMA, Madsen earned a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and finished fifth at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Madsen’s journey in professional MMA began in September 2013 while preparing for the 2016 Summer Olympics . He made a successful debut by defeating Philipp Henze via first-round TKO at European MMA 6.
Madsen joins a growing list of UFC veterans who have recently announced their retirement. Flyweight Malcolm Gordon also retired after a loss at UFC 297 earlier this month.
