Cris Cyborg Defends Bellator Title
Over the weekend, Cris Cyborg showcased her dominance once again as she successfully defended her Bellator women’s featherweight championship for the fifth time. This time, she faced off against UFC veteran Cat Zingano at Bellator 300.
Cyborg, a true legend in the world of MMA, has faced numerous speculations about her being transgender due to her superior conditioning and physique. However, these speculations couldn’t be further from the truth. At 38 years old, she is undeniably one of the greatest women MMA fighters to have ever stepped in the cage.
Cyborg’s MMA journey began in 2005 with a first-round submission loss to Erica Paes at SF – Showfight 2. However, she quickly rebounded and went on an impressive 16-fight undefeated streak before making her UFC debut in 2016. In her debut, she defeated Leslie Smith via a first-round TKO.
Her rise through the ranks was swift, and she claimed the UFC featherweight championship at UFC 214 with a third-round TKO victory over Tonya Evinger. Cyborg successfully defended the title twice before her first loss in over 13 years, a first-round KO defeat to another legend, Amanda Nunes, at UFC 232.
Due to her strained relationship with the UFC, Cyborg was released from the promotion in 2019, leading her to join Bellator. Since then, she has been undefeated in the promotion with a record of 6-0 and currently holds the No. 1 spot on the Bellator pound-for-pound rankings.
Disappointment Over Amanda Nunes Rematch
One of the most heartbreaking moments in Cyborg’s career was her loss to Amanda Nunes. To make matters worse, she was cut from the UFC shortly after, eliminating any chance of a rematch.
In a recent interview with MMA reporter James Lynch, Cyborg expressed her disappointment over Nunes’ retirement and the missed opportunity for a rematch:
"I don’t want to say upset but… I think the right word is disappointed. I had one goal in my heart: to have the rematch before I retired or she retired. I know a lot of fans were also hoping for this rematch. After our fight, I was undefeated for 14 years. I believe the rematch would have been incredible."
