Greenwich is about to witness an adrenaline-pumping boxing event like never before. Kastriot Xhema, a professional MMA fighter and Greenwich native, is organizing ‘Glove Up Greenwich,’ a charity boxing event that promises to be a night filled with excitement and fireworks. This event, scheduled for September 30, aims to raise funds for local charities and bring the community together.
The event will take place at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, which will be transformed into a boxing arena with a massive 40 foot by 40 foot square truss. The park will be decked out with display screens on all sides, ensuring that every spectator gets a front-row experience. Xhema, known for his previous fights at prestigious venues like Mohegan Sun and Madison Square Garden, guarantees a spectacular show.
To ensure a memorable experience, Xhema and his team are pulling out all the stops. They expect to sell all 4,000 available tickets for the fight, and have lined up food trucks, merchandise stands, and a VIP area that can accommodate 800 people. The event will feature nine fights, all sanctioned by USA Boxing.
While the lineup of fighters is yet to be finalized, Xhema is in talks with various individuals, including Greenwich police officers and first responders, to step into the ring. He is also considering having at least one or two women fights. Xhema, who knows numerous trained amateurs in the Tri-State area, has a vast pool of potential fighters to choose from.
Apart from the thrill of the fights, ‘Glove Up Greenwich’ aims to support local charities. Proceeds from the event will benefit organizations like the Rowan Center, Greenwich United Way, the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department, and GEMS, Greenwich Emergency Medical Service. Xhema, a proud resident of Greenwich, wants to give back to the community and make a positive impact.
Xhema’s journey in the fighting world has been remarkable. Despite facing challenges in his youth that led to his expulsion from Greenwich High School and two stints in prison, he found solace in fighting. Over the years, he has fought professionally, earning the nickname ‘Slaughterhouse’ for his prowess in the cage.
While Xhema is currently focused on organizing ‘Glove Up Greenwich,’ he plans to return to professional fighting next year. He has been steadily working his way back to fighting condition after falling ill during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tickets for ‘Glove Up Greenwich’ went on sale in late June and can be purchased through the event’s official website. To stay updated on the latest information, follow the event’s Instagram page.
