Mixed martial arts star Francis Ngannou is set to face World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in a highly anticipated boxing match in Saudi Arabia on October 28. In a surprising announcement, Ngannou revealed that he will have legendary heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson in his corner for the bout.
Ngannou and Tyson confirmed their partnership in a statement released by Riyadh Season, the annual entertainment and sports festival that will host the Ngannou-Fury fight. Tyson expressed his full support for Ngannou, stating, ‘It’s no secret I back Ngannou 100 percent in this face-off of champions. He has one hard punch, and when it lands, it’s game over. I am looking forward to working with Ngannou and supporting his transition from the Octagon to the boxing ring.’
Although Ngannou has no professional boxing record, the 36-year-old Cameroonian-French fighter is known for his devastating punching power. He became the UFC heavyweight champion and held the title until his departure from the organization in January. With an impressive record of 17 wins in 20 professional UFC fights, including 12 knockouts, Ngannou is confident that Tyson’s experience and boxing IQ will be crucial in honing his technique for this super-fight.
The upcoming bout between Ngannou and Fury will not be for Fury’s WBC title. Instead, it will be an ‘exhibition’ match held under the rules of professional boxing. Fury, a British boxer, last fought in December when he defeated Derek Chisora. Talks for an undisputed world title showdown against Oleksandr Usyk fell through earlier this year.
