Georges St-Pierre to Be Inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame
LAS VEGAS, September 7, 2023 – UFC, the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization, is excited to announce that former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre will become the first MMA athlete to receive the Order of Sport from Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
The 67th Annual Order of Sport Awards, where St-Pierre will be honored, will be livestreamed on Thursday, October 19 at 10:00 a.m. ET / 7:00 a.m. PT. UFC is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the event, and fans can register for the livestream through Eventbrite. Tickets are available at no cost and will be provided digitally upon checkout.
In his statement, Georges St-Pierre expressed his gratitude for the induction, saying, "I’m honored to be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and receive the Order of Sport. Martial arts changed my life and I was fortunate to be able to represent Canada on the biggest stage in the world. The Order of Sport Awards is an annual event that celebrates the induction of exceptional athletes and sport builders into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The receipt of the Order of Sport is a significant moment that recognizes the immense contributions made to Canada through sport. Previous recipients of this prestigious honor include NHL icon Wayne Gretzky and NBA legend Steve Nash.
During his illustrious career, Georges St-Pierre competed in 28 MMA fights over a span of 17 years. He achieved an impressive record of 26-2 (20-2 in UFC), with notable victories over UFC Hall of Famers BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, and Michael Bisping. St-Pierre also defeated renowned opponents such as Sean Sherk, Johnny Hendricks, Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz, and Jake Shields. He is a three-time former UFC welterweight champion and one of only seven fighters in UFC history to win titles in two weight classes. St-Pierre’s 13 consecutive wins and 13 title fight wins are tied for the second-most in UFC history (2007-2017). He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2021.
Outside the Octagon, St-Pierre has received numerous accolades, including being named a three-time Rogers Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year (2008-2010), BlackBelt Magazine MMA Fighter of the Year (2008), Sports Illustrated Fighter of the Year (2009), MMA Junkie Fighter of the Year (2009), World MMA Awards Fighter of the Year (2009), Wrestling Observer Most Outstanding Fighter (2008-2010), Wrestling Observer MMA Most Valuable Fighter (2011, 2013, 2017), and MMA Junkie Fighter of the Year (2017).
St-Pierre will make his return to live competition in a submission grappling match at UFC FIGHT PASS INVITATIONAL 5, scheduled for this December in Las Vegas. This event will mark St-Pierre’s comeback to professional combat sports since his victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 217: BISPING vs. ST-PIERRE on November 4, 2017, where he claimed the UFC middleweight title. He later vacated the title following his retirement. The announcement of St-Pierre’s opponent, as well as the other competitors on the FIGHT PASS INVITATIONAL card, will be made later this year.
