Conor McGregor’s Potential Return
While Conor McGregor has been absent from the world of mixed martial arts for nearly three years, his presence and popularity remain unmatched. As rumors circulate about his imminent comeback, Charles Oliveira’s coach, Diego Lima, expressed his preference for a matchup between ‘Do Bronx’ and ‘The Notorious’ rather than a fight against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
In an interview with Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting, Lima, the coach from Chute Boxe Academy, shared his thoughts:
"When we talk about McGregor, everybody says, ‘Lima, stop talking about that, move on.’ But fighting McGregor would be great. McGregor has achieved incredible feats. He was the highest-paid athlete in 2021, surpassing the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and top NFL and NBA players. His accomplishments are monumental. He even starred in a film and became the highest-paid first-time actor ever."
Lima continued to praise McGregor’s record-breaking achievements and expressed his eagerness for a potential fight:
"Look at the records he breaks. It’s incredible what McGregor does. So, a fight with him would be incredible. Professionally speaking, it would be amazing. If we had the chance to fight McGregor at welterweight after this fight, we would take it. But what about the belt? Okay, we’ll fight for the belt after that, God willing. However, we acknowledge that with McGregor, the persona has become larger than the person himself."
Lima also mentioned that McGregor had previously shown interest in a fight against Oliveira, as the two engaged in a war of words last year. Although ‘The Notorious’ has been out of action since his leg injury at UFC 264 in July 2021, he hinted at a potential matchup with Michael Chandler at UFC 303, set to take place during International Fight Week in June.
Despite McGregor’s extended hiatus, the former double champ recently stated that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. In an interview with Adam Catterall of TNT Sports, McGregor shared:
"I’ll only retire when I’m in a box and going down into the ground. Something that really resonated with me was when Mike Tyson was asked about his comeback for the Roy Jones Jr. fight. He was asked what his mentor and coach, Cus D’Amato, would say to him after all these years. Why come back now? Tyson’s response was, ‘What took you so long?’ That really struck a chord with me."
