Eddie Alvarez Still Hopeful for Trilogy Bout
Eddie Alvarez, the former multiple-time Bellator Lightweight champion, is still holding out hope for a potential trilogy bout with his old rival Michael Chandler. These two fighters provided the mixed martial arts (MMA) world with some of the most memorable bouts in the history of the sport.
Alvarez and Chandler’s rivalry began during the Bellator season 4 Lightweight tournament, where Chandler earned his title shot with a unanimous decision victory over Patricky “Pitbull” Freire. Their first encounter was nothing short of legendary, with Chandler, who was undefeated at the time, pulling off a monster upset by finishing Alvarez via a fourth-round rear-naked choke.
Two years later, Alvarez got his redemption in a rematch, defeating Chandler by split decision. However, they never crossed paths in the UFC, as Alvarez left Bellator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) before Chandler joined the organization.
Despite their separate paths, Alvarez reached out to Chandler when they were both free agents, proposing the idea of selling their third fight to every promotion and seeing who would pay them the most. Unfortunately, Chandler showed initial interest but never followed up on the proposal.
Chandler, currently awaiting his expected matchup with Conor McGregor after coaching against each other on The Ultimate Fighter 31 (TUF), is more interested in facing McGregor than Alvarez. Coincidentally, Alvarez is the last man McGregor defeated at Lightweight.
While Chandler waits for his big fight, Alvarez is preparing for his second bout in bare-knuckle boxing. He will face Mike Perry at BKFC 56 in Salt Lake City, Utah next weekend.
