According to a police report, the incident took place in the parking lot of Baez’s Cutler Bay apartment. The attacker, identified as 50-year-old Omar Marrero, initially tried to assault Baez while he was sitting inside his car. Marrero struck the car window with a knife and then attempted to cut Baez, who managed to escape.

Undeterred, Marrero retrieved another knife and charged at Baez, forcefully slamming him to the ground. However, Baez’s extensive training kicked in, and he swiftly put Marrero in a chokehold, causing him to release his grip. Baez then restrained Marrero until the police arrived.

In an interview, Baez described the harrowing encounter, stating that Marrero appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was behaving erratically. Baez’s quick thinking and ability to remain calm under pressure played a crucial role in subduing the attacker.

Marrero now faces charges of burglary and aggravated assault. He has been denied bond and is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
