Tye Ruotolo: From Grappling Phenom to MMA Star?
Tye Ruotolo, the 20-year-old submission grappling phenom, is on the cusp of becoming a ONE world champion. However, he can’t seem to shake off the idea of transitioning to mixed martial arts (MMA). Alongside his twin brother Kade, Tye has been contemplating a move to MMA since joining ONE Championship in 2022. In a recent interview with the South China Morning Post, Ruotolo expressed his interest in MMA but emphasized his focus on achieving his grappling goals first.
Ruotolo stated, "When the dust settles and I’m ready to make the change, I’ll make the change." Despite his aspirations, Ruotolo’s MMA debut will have to wait. After his impressive submission victory over no.2-ranked lightweight MMA fighter Dagi Arslanaliev at ONE Fight Night 13, Ruotolo not only received a $50,000 performance bonus but also earned a shot at the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world title.
The highly anticipated title fight is scheduled to take place later this year at a venue yet to be announced. Ruotolo’s opponent will be determined in the coming weeks. ONE Fight Night 13, held at the historic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, was a thrilling event that showcased top-tier talent. Fans in the United States and Canada can catch a replay of the action for free on Amazon Prime Video.
