Dustin Poirier Ready for UFC Lightweight Title Fight
After a thrilling victory over Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299, Dustin Poirier is back in the spotlight and eager for a shot at the UFC lightweight title. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Poirier expressed his desire to face the current champion, Islam Makhachev, this summer.
Poirier stated, ‘If I could pick a fight, the title fight is my choice, that’s what I want.’ Despite facing Alexander Volkanovski twice in the past year, Makhachev has a list of contenders waiting for their chance. However, both Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje are already booked for a fight at UFC 300 on April 13th, leaving Islam without an opponent for his desired return in June.
Makhachev acknowledged that Poirier doesn’t necessarily deserve a title shot, but due to the lack of options, it might be the only viable matchup. Poirier responded, ‘I’ve done more in the sport of mixed martial arts than he has. I can beat anybody in the world, and I hope he’s next.’
For Poirier, capturing the UFC lightweight title is the only remaining goal in his career. He emphasized that he has accomplished everything else, from building multiple businesses to headlining numerous events. With his family’s future secured, Poirier is determined to achieve the ultimate accolade.
The decision now lies with the UFC. If the promotion is looking to schedule a lightweight title fight before August, Poirier vs. Makhachev seems to be the best option available. However, the UFC has been known to delay Makhachev’s fights, despite his requests for three fights per year.
Only time will tell if Dustin Poirier’s callout will be answered and if he will get the opportunity to compete for the UFC lightweight championship.
