Tony Ferguson Faces Retirement
Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson, is set to end his professional mixed martial arts career with a record-setting eighth consecutive loss at UFC Abu Dhabi in August. Dana White, the CEO of the promotion, has advised Ferguson to retire. Ferguson, a former interim lightweight titleholder and Ultimate Fighter winner, will return to the Octagon at the beginning of August in a main card opener at UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi, alongside fellow veteran Nick Diaz. Ferguson is on a seven-fight defeat streak, only matched by former two-weight titleholder B.J. Penn. His last fight was at UFC 296 in December, where he lost via unanimous decision against Paddy Pimblett. Despite White’s calls for retirement since his last defeat, Ferguson is scheduled to face Michael Chiesa in a rescheduled bout at UFC Abu Dhabi. White emphasized that if Ferguson sets the record for the most consecutive losses in Octagon history, he should retire. Ferguson’s most recent victory dates back to 2019, with a second-round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Donald Cerrone. Could Ferguson break his losing streak at UFC Abu Dhabi?
