UFC middleweight contender Khamzat Chimaev has announced that he will be undergoing surgery in the coming weeks. This decision comes after Chimaev suffered a torn ligament in his right hand during his most recent fight against former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Despite initially attempting to avoid surgery, Chimaev’s plans have changed.
Chimaev made the announcement on his Instagram Live, stating, "I’m going to do a surgery, operation in one, two weeks. After that, do the recovery, come back, smash somebody."
Chimaev’s representatives have not yet responded to ESPN’s request for comment.
The 29-year-old fighter remains optimistic about his recovery and has set his sights on a return in the first quarter of 2024. He even called out UFC President Dana White, saying, "UFC 300, tell Dana White [to] make it happen."
Chimaev, who was born in Chechnya and trains in Sweden and Dubai, has been a highly touted prospect in the UFC. With a record of 13-0, he has proven himself with seven wins in the UFC, including five finishes. While he has competed in both the welterweight and middleweight divisions, Chimaev is expected to continue his career in the 185-pound division.
