Weili Zhang’s Unique Approach to Fighting
Weili Zhang, the reigning UFC strawweight champion, showcased a unique approach to fighting at UFC 292. Inspired by Bruce Lee’s philosophy of ‘fighting without fighting,’ Zhang dominated her opponent Amanda Lemos and emerged victorious. In an interview with the China Times, Zhang discussed how she incorporated traditional martial arts philosophy into her tactics.
The Art of ‘Fighting Without Fighting’
Bruce Lee famously described his style as the art of ‘fighting without fighting.’ Zhang, who has become one of the best female mixed martial artists, embraced this concept in her own fighting style. She explained, ‘I learned this concept at a very young age, but it wasn’t until recent years that I have developed a deeper understanding of what ‘be water’ means, which I can blend into my tactics.’
Embracing Chinese Culture
Zhang, who trains in Phuket but is deeply connected to her Chinese roots, emphasized the influence of Chinese culture on her career. She stated, ‘I have benefited a lot from Chinese culture. It’s more about studying and learning how to comprehend. It’s important to learn from what the ancestors have left us, such as sincerity and modesty, and know how to be respectful and grateful.’
Incorporating Tai Chi
Surprisingly, Zhang revealed that her MMA career has been influenced by the internal Chinese martial art of tai chi. She explained, ‘When I would use force while wrestling, it would always feel especially hard, but now with the idea of tai chi, everything is curved – there is rigidity and flexibility.’
Zhang’s unique approach to fighting and her incorporation of traditional martial arts philosophy make her a formidable force in the UFC strawweight division.
