Antonio Vargas vs Jonathan Rodriguez: Bantamweight Title Eliminator

On Saturday evening, 2016 US Olympian Antonio Vargas will face Jonathan Rodriguez in a highly anticipated 12-round World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight title eliminator. The event will take place at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, FL.

Vargas, the WBA’s second-ranked contender, boasts an impressive record of 17-1 with 9 KO’s. Hailing from Kissimmee, FL, Vargas represented Team USA at the 2016 Olympics. In 2023, he had a remarkable year, defeating contender Mitchell Banquez in six rounds and showcasing his dominance against former world champion Hernan Marquez, ultimately securing a ten-round decision victory.

Rodriguez, born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, and fighting out of Bethlehem, PA, holds an excellent professional record of 17-1-1 with 7 KO’s. Ranked number three by the WBA, Rodriguez made waves in the boxing world with a devastating first-round knockout over former titlist Kal Yafai.

Vargas expressed his excitement about the upcoming fight, stating, "I’m thrilled to be fighting in front of my fans in Orlando and on a prestigious platform like DAZN. Jonathan is known for his aggressive style, but we have a solid game plan to counter that. This is the fight I’ve been dreaming of my entire career, and a victory on Saturday evening will propel me to a world title shot."

The winner of the Vargas-Rodriguez bout will become the mandatory challenger for the WBA bantamweight title, setting up a showdown with the victor of the Takuma Inoue vs Jerwin Ancajas fight.

Amaury Piedra of Boxlab Promotions expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "We’re delighted to collaborate with Matchroom to bring a world-class championship card to Central Florida. This card has it all, from championship fights to title eliminators and rising prospects. Seeing Antonio seize this incredible opportunity in his hometown in front of his fans is truly phenomenal. I have no doubt that Vargas and Rodriguez will deliver an electrifying fight that fans will thoroughly enjoy."

The Vargas-Rodriguez fight will be broadcast live on DAZN at 8 pm, alongside a stacked card featuring a welterweight title eliminator, Olympic Gold Medalist Andy Cruz, and a thrilling main event between Edgar Berlanga and Padraig McCrory.

Matchroom Boxing, in association with Boxlab Promotions, is the promoter of this event. Tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com, and the opening bout is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
