MMA Program for Underserved Youth

At Evolve Fitness and Training in DeKalb, former local fighter Joe Judkins is making a difference by teaching mixed martial arts to area youth and young adults. Judkins, along with combat sports athletes Mike Whelpley and Jake Waters, has launched Project All-Stars, a new program focused on the fundamentals of MMA. The initiative aims to provide an opportunity for underserved youth in the community to train and stay off the streets.

MMA Training

The program, which was piloted in November at Evolve Fitness and Training, is open to anyone interested in participating. Judkins emphasizes that there is no discrimination based on background, political association, color, creed, gender, or sex. The only requirement is the desire to learn and improve.

With years of experience in mixed martial arts, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muy Thai, wrestling, and boxing, Judkins is well-versed in various disciplines. Although he can no longer compete due to family commitments, his passion for the sport has led him to give back to the community and build the next generation of fighters.

Training Session

Participants in the program, such as 14-year-old Sycamore resident Viktor Hammon, have experienced the benefits of MMA training. Hammon describes the adrenaline rush and the confidence it brings. Another participant, 27-year-old DeKalb resident Dylan Cranden, appreciates the program as an escape, a way to blow off steam, learn new things, and build bonds with others.

Judkins emphasizes that Project All-Stars is not just a fight gym but a fight family. The program aims to encourage participants to become the best version of themselves both inside and outside the gym.
