The UTM Cobra Muay Thai Club is leading the way in a groundbreaking movement to revolutionize martial arts. Spearheading this movement in Ontario, Canada, the club aims to go beyond traditional practices and embrace interdisciplinary approaches. In an exclusive interview with The Varsity, Executive Director Talha Çelik and Head Coach Ahmad Siyar Habibi discuss their vision for the future of martial arts.

Çelik explains that their goal is to move away from the fragmented approach of multidisciplinary martial arts and adopt a more holistic training regimen. This approach, inspired by the rise of mixed martial arts (MMA), combines various disciplines such as calisthenics, fitness and strength, conditioning, striking, and grappling. By integrating these elements, practitioners gain a comprehensive understanding of martial arts.

The Cobra Muay Thai club aims to make MMA more accessible to all, promoting health and fitness. They strive to offer diverse skills beyond traditional martial arts classes, exploring the intersection of martial arts with philosophy, history, pedagogy, early child development, kinesiology, and more. Through martial arts workshops, research opportunities, and community-building initiatives, they aim to create a well-rounded martial arts experience.

Partnerships and initiatives play a crucial role in the club’s mission. The Cobra Muay Thai club has joined forces with esteemed institutions like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the European Union’s Erasmus+ project. These collaborations aim to further develop martial arts programming and promote mental and physical health. The club’s initiatives are not limited to professionals; they also focus on serving Canadian youth through educational programs and workshops.

Inclusion of martial arts programming within the K-12 curriculum is one of the club’s aspirations. Drawing from their experience in Central Asia, Habibi and his team at the Canadian Traditional Taekwondo Association aim to bring this movement to Canada. They envision creating a global network of martial arts studies, striking a balance between practical training and theoretical components. Through a comprehensive curriculum covering anatomy, stretching, biomechanics, and more, the club aims to provide a preview of the future of martial arts education.

Cobra Muay Thai’s initiatives also extend to fostering connections within the martial arts community. By partnering with over 500 facilities in Canada and the US, they offer networking opportunities for their members. They also aim to collaborate with faculty-led and student-led groups at U of T, including the biology and kinesiology departments and UTM’s MMA club. Professional martial artists, including UFC fighters like Jasmine Jasudavicius, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Belal Muhammad, have shown interest in the project and have provided valuable insights.

With their unique philosophy and inclusive programming, the Cobra Muay Thai club is at the forefront of the martial arts revolution. By promoting holistic and accessible martial arts education, they are paving the way for a transformative movement in the field.
