Fedor Emelianenko Announces Retirement from MMA
Fedor Emelianenko, also known as ‘The Last Emperor,’ recently announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA) following his loss to Ryan Bader in a rematch at Bellator 290 in February. While he won’t be returning to the MMA cage, Emelianenko expressed his desire to step into the boxing ring and potentially face the legendary Mike Tyson .
In a recent interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, the 46-year-old Russian fighter revealed his plans to fight ‘Iron Mike’ in October on the undercard of the highly anticipated Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury bout. Emelianenko expressed his admiration for Tyson, stating, ‘He has a big name, he’s a legend… It would be interesting because you can see a lot of his videos on YouTube and all over the place, he’s still in good shape. He still works pads, he still has that same power, he still has that speed and power. That would be awesome if it’s possible, I would definitely do it.’
Emelianenko’s retirement from MMA comes as a surprise to many, as he had previously stated that he would never completely leave the sport, unlike former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Both Emelianenko and Nurmagomedov have made lasting impacts on MMA and continue to stay involved in the sport through coaching, training, and mentoring the next generation of fighters.
During a press conference at Bellator 290, Emelianenko expressed his commitment to the sport, saying, ‘Of course, I’ll be involved still because I have my team. These guys are like family to me. I will try to do my best and help them in any way I can. All my life I was in sport. The sport is part of my life. The sport is in my blood.’
Emelianenko’s retirement marks the end of an era in MMA, but his potential boxing match with Mike Tyson promises to be an exciting spectacle for combat sports fans worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated event.
