Former Bellator featherweight champion A.J. McKee was set to headline this weekend’s Bellator X RIZIN 2 event in a lightweight tournament bout against Patricky Pitbull. However, McKee has been forced to withdraw from the fight due to a nasty case of staph infection.

In a video shared on his social media accounts, McKee explained the situation and displayed the severity of the infection that prevented him from competing. The footage is not for the faint-hearted, as the infection is quite graphic.

“I’m sorry but I won’t be fighting this weekend in Japan,” McKee stated. “To all my Japanese fans, I’ll see you guys soon. And guess what: we will be back in Japan, I promise you that, so I’ll see you guys soon. I appreciate all the support.”

McKee revealed that he contracted staph, a highly dangerous infection that can cause serious harm and even hospitalization. He had to visit the emergency room and has been on antibiotics to treat the infection. Although his condition is improving, he showcased two circular holes on his knee as a result of the infection.

Staph infections can range from minor annoyances to life-threatening situations. MMA fighters have been known to suffer from severe cases of staph, with some even requiring hospitalization. McKee’s infection is not as severe as those cases, but it is still significant enough to warrant medical attention and prevent him from competing.

Staph is highly contagious, making it impossible for any reputable commission or promotion to allow McKee to participate with open wounds. As a result, Bellator X RIZIN 2 will proceed with a new lightweight matchup between Patricky Freire and RIZIN lightweight champion Roberto de Souza. This fight will serve as a quarter-final in the Bellator lightweight tournament.

McKee will now be placed in an alternate slot for the tournament, in case any other fighters are unable to compete. Bellator X RIZIN 2 will be broadcast on Saturday, July 29 at 11pm on Showtime.
