UFC Fighter Cynthia Calvillo’s Surprising Return: All You Need to Know

Cynthia Calvillo, despite reports of her departure from the UFC earlier this year, is set to make a comeback in a highly anticipated bout. Calvillo (9-6-1 MMA, 6-6-1 UFC) is scheduled to face off against Elise Reed (7-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) at the upcoming UFC Fight Night event on September 16, coinciding with Mexican Independence Day.

The event, which will showcase several Mexican and Mexican-American athletes, will take place at the prestigious T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main event of the night will feature a thrilling rematch between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko.

According to sources close to the matter, the matchup between Calvillo and Reed is being finalized, although the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. The news was initially reported by ESPN Deportes.

Calvillo, 36, last competed at UFC 287 in April, where she suffered a defeat against Loopy Godinez. This loss marked her fifth consecutive loss in the UFC. Following the fight, Calvillo was removed from fan ranking eligibility by the algorithm-based Twitter account UFC Roster Watch. Consequently, UFC officials confirmed her release from the promotion. However, the circumstances surrounding her return remain unclear.

On the other hand, Reed, 30, has had a mixed record since her UFC debut in July 2021, alternating between wins and losses. In her most recent fight in June, she secured a victory over Jinh Yu Frey by unanimous decision.

The UFC Fight Night event on September 16 will feature an exciting lineup of fights, including the women’s flyweight title bout between champion Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko. Other notable matchups include Shavkat Rakhmonov vs. Kelvin Gastelum, Tracy Cortez vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius, Chris Curtis vs. Anthony Hernandez, Lupita Godinez vs. Sam Hughes, and Edgar Chairez vs. Daniel Lacerda.
