The Hardest Belt to Earn in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Mixed martial arts legend Demetrious Johnson recently shared a valuable lesson for those interested in pursuing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). According to Johnson, contrary to popular belief, the black belt is not the most difficult belt to achieve in BJJ. In a recent Instagram video, the reigning ONE flyweight MMA world champion explained that the white belt is actually the hardest to gain.

Johnson emphasized the importance of simply starting the journey in BJJ, stating that once you take that first step, everything becomes easier. He described BJJ as a culture and encouraged aspiring practitioners to embrace it.

Johnson’s Journey in BJJ

Earlier this year, the 37-year-old American, who trains at AMC Pankration and Evolve MMA, ventured into the world of BJJ. He showcased his skills and determination by winning the gold medal in the Master 2 featherweight brown belt division at the IBJJF Masters World. This achievement earned him his second stripe brown belt and brought him closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a BJJ black belt.

Learning from Bibiano Fernandes

Johnson also spoke highly of his good friend Bibiano Fernandes, a former ONE bantamweight MMA world champion. Fernandes has not only excelled in MMA but has also established his own gym, Flash Academy Martial Arts, in Canada. Johnson encouraged his fans to train with Fernandes and learn from him, as he is a master of the grappling art.

Fernandes, a 43-year-old Brazilian, holds a BJJ black belt and has achieved numerous accolades in both BJJ and MMA, including multiple world titles in DREAM and ONE Championship.
