Sacramento State and UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber are teaming up to launch Combat Sports and Martial Arts University (Combat U), a groundbreaking program that combines higher education with world-class combat sports training. This collaboration, believed to be the first of its kind, will be overseen by the Sacramento State athletic department and run in partnership with Faber’s Team Alpha Male. Combat U will offer Sacramento State students the opportunity to participate in club sports such as boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, and jiu-jitsu, with scholarship funds available for those who wish to pursue both their education and combat sports training. The program will culminate in a pro prep class for MMA, and students will have the chance to compete in competitions promoted by Faber’s A1 Combat. Although Combat U is not supported by the NCAA, Faber and Sacramento State president J. Luke Wood believe that this program is just the beginning and that more university-backed combat sports programs could emerge in the future.
