Sailors and Marines Experience Mixed Martial Arts
Sailors and Marines assigned to the Harpers-Ferry class USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) recently had the unique opportunity to train with six-time ONE World Champion, Angela Lee. The training session took place at the Sembawang Naval Installation gym in Singapore during Pacific Partnership 2023 (PP23).
During the session, servicemembers got a firsthand experience of what it takes to be a world champion mixed martial artist. Under the guidance of Angela Lee, they learned striking, takedowns, and submissions techniques. It was a beautiful sight to see them give these techniques a try.
Angela Lee, who became the youngest person to win a world title in MMA at the age of 19, took the time to coach service members of various experience levels. For some of them, this was their first time trying martial arts, and it was an honor for Lee to meet and train with them.
The engagement concluded with photos and autographs from Angela Lee. Chief Warrant Officer Aeryk Church, combat cargo officer of USS Pearl Harbor, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to train with a great champion and learn from her. The USS Pearl Harbor is currently on a port stop in Singapore as part of the Pacific Partnership mission.
Angela Lee and a group of PP23 personnel are scheduled to attend ONE Fight Night 14 at Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 30. The main event of the night will be the Interim ONE Atomweight MMA World Championship between Stamp Fairtex and Ham Seo Hee, which is in Angela Lee’s division.
