Savannah Marshall’s Transition to MMA
Savannah Marshall, the IBF, WBA, and WBO Super Middleweight Boxing World Champion, is set to make her first appearance in the world of mixed martial arts. On Saturday, Jun. 8, she will step into the cage at Utilita Arena in Newcastle, UK with the PFL.
Marshall, born in Newcastle, has an impressive record in boxing, with numerous knockouts to her name. Her move to MMA adds depth to the PFL’s women’s division, which already features rival Claressa Shields, among others.
A Dominant Force in Boxing
At 32 years old, Marshall has made a significant mark in women’s boxing, particularly in the super middleweight division. Her amateur career was illustrious, culminating in a gold medal at the 2012 World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China.
Since turning professional in 2017, Marshall has captured titles such as the IBF, WBA, and WBO Super Middleweight Champion. Known for her striking power and technical proficiency, she boasts an impressive 13-1 overall record. Her only loss came at the hands of Claressa Shields, who is also competing in MMA with the PFL.
Seeking Redemption
Marshall is determined to avenge her loss to Shields. When asked about the possibility of facing Shields in the cage, she stated, "That’s the plan. I’m not stupid and I can see why they were interested in me, from the response that me and Claressa got in the ring. So that’s definitely on the cards."
Embracing a New Challenge
For her MMA debut on Jun. 8, Marshall’s opponent has not yet been announced by the PFL. However, Marshall has expressed her excitement for the transition to MMA and her eagerness to learn new skills such as kicking, grappling, and wrestling. In an interview, she shared, "I’ve boxed for 20-plus years, doing the same combinations, the same routine. I’m excited to learn something different. It’s changing it up. I might take to it, or it could be a total disaster! So we’ll have to see."
