Sailors and Marines Experience Mixed Martial Arts

Sailors and Marines assigned to the Harpers-Ferry class USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) had the incredible opportunity to train with six-time ONE World Champion, Angela Lee. This training session took place at the Sembawang Naval Installation gym in Singapore during Pacific Partnership 2023 (PP23).

During the session, servicemembers were able to learn and practice various mixed martial arts techniques, including striking, takedowns, and submissions. Angela Lee, known as ‘Unstoppable’, personally coached the participants, providing guidance and support to individuals of all experience levels. For some, it was their first time trying martial arts, making the experience even more special.

Angela Lee, a trilateral native of Singapore, the U.S., and Canada, made history by becoming the youngest person to win a world title in MMA. At just 19 years old, she secured the inaugural ONE Atomweight MMA World Championship. Her expertise and achievements in the sport made her an inspiration to the servicemembers.

The training session concluded with a memorable moment as participants had the opportunity to take photos with Angela Lee and receive autographs. Chief Warrant Officer Aeryk Church, combat cargo officer of USS Pearl Harbor, expressed his gratitude for the experience and mentioned his desire for future sparring opportunities with Angela.

In addition to the training session, a group of PP23 personnel, including Angela Lee, are scheduled to attend ONE Fight Night 14 at Singapore Indoor Stadium. The main event of the night will feature Stamp Fairtex vs. Ham Seo Hee, competing for the Interim ONE Atomweight MMA World Championship.

This unique training opportunity provided servicemembers with a firsthand experience of the dedication and skills required to become a world champion mixed martial artist. It also served as a memorable event during the ongoing Pacific Partnership mission, which focuses on humanitarian assistance and disaster response in the Indo-Pacific region.
