British heavyweight Tom Aspinall made a triumphant return to MMA with a devastating first-round knockout of Marcin Tybura in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night at the O2 Arena. It was almost a year to the day after Aspinall tore his MCL, ending his last visit to the octagon after just 15 seconds of his bout against Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall’s knee gave out, but this time, he showcased his resilience and skill.
Aspinall started the fight strong, delivering a head kick that wobbled his Polish opponent. However, he remained calm and composed, carefully picking his shots. It was a straight right hand that ultimately sat Tybura down, and Aspinall wasted no time following up with thunderous hammer fists. The referee had to step in after just one minute and 13 seconds, declaring the fight over.
In his post-fight interview, Aspinall reflected on the tough year he had endured. He spoke about how he overcame his struggles, stating that his mind and body had changed. Determined and confident, Aspinall declared that he is going all the way.
Currently ranked fifth in the heavyweight division, Aspinall has his sights set on the title. He revealed his plan to attend the upcoming fight between Cyril Gane and Serghei Spivak in Paris. Aspinall intends to be in the front row, ready to face the winner. And after that, he aims to challenge the reigning champion, Jon Jones.
In the co-main event of the evening, Lithuania’s Julija Stoliarenko stunned the English crowd by submitting Molly McCann in their flyweight contest. Stoliarenko secured an armbar, forcing McCann to tap out early in the first round.
The British fighters had mixed fortunes throughout the night. Scotland’s Paul Craig delivered an impressive TKO victory over Brazilian Andre Muniz. Meanwhile, London-born featherweight Nathaniel Wood engaged in a thrilling battle with Californian Andre Fili, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory.
