LAS VEGAS — Igor Severino’s highly anticipated mixed-martial arts debut took a shocking turn on Saturday as he was disqualified for biting his opponent during a UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas.

Severino, a 20-year-old fighter from Brazil, faced off against fellow countryman Andre Lima in a flyweight match. In a clinch against the cage during the second round, Lima suddenly yelled out in pain, lifting his left arm to reveal a bite mark.

This incident immediately brought to mind the infamous ‘Bite Fight’ between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson in 1997. Referee Chris Tognoni reviewed the play before making the decision to disqualify Severino at the 2:52 mark of the round.

Severino, who had an impressive record of 9-0 prior to this fight, suffered his first loss. Lima, also making his UFC debut, improved his undefeated record to 8-0.

UFC President Dana White expressed his disappointment in Severino’s actions, stating, ‘If you get frustrated and want out of the fight, there are plenty of ways to do it, but the worst thing you can do is bite your opponent. Now, you not only lose the biggest opportunity of your life, but you also face serious consequences with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.’

The UFC made light of the incident on social media, referring to the bout as the ‘bite of the night,’ a humorous twist on their usual ‘fight of the night’ promotion.
