Matthews Martial Arts Shines at World Kickboxing Championship

Read about the incredible success of Matthews Martial Arts at the World Kickboxing Championship in England. Meranda and Dustin Matthews, the instructors and co-owners of the gym, triumphed in multiple disciplines, inspiring others with their dedication and commitment.

Over the weekend, the kickboxing world championship took place, and fighters from Matthews Martial Arts in Odessa, Texas, made their mark on the global stage. Competing in the World Kickboxing Organization World Open in England, the athletes showcased their skills in various disciplines, including ring sports, kickboxing, boxing, karate, continuous sparring, and mixed martial arts.

With over 1,000 competitors from around the world, the tournament was a two-day event that attracted fighters from all corners of the globe. Matthews Martial Arts represented West Texas and the United States with pride, finishing 4th overall in the tournament.

Meranda Matthews, Instructor and Co-Owner of Matthews Martial Arts, expressed her excitement about the team’s performance, saying, "For the US team, it was us two and there were some fighters from Amarillo and a couple from Georgia and some other places. So we took about ten fighters over there, and as a country, we finished 4th in the whole tournament, which was pretty awesome considering there were hundreds of fighters from all over."

Meranda and her husband, Dustin Matthew, have a combined 30-plus years of experience in mixed martial arts and have competed in numerous competitions throughout their careers. After taking a break from competition to focus on their family, they set a goal to return to the ring and make a comeback.

"After we had our daughter, we kind of took a step back from competition. So we set a goal to go back and compete again and go for it this year," said Dustin Matthew, Instructor and Co-Owner of Matthews Martial Arts.

Their determination paid off as both Meranda and Dustin achieved remarkable success at the championship. Meranda emerged victorious in the karate competition, while Dustin triumphed in kickboxing, karate, and taekwondo.

For Meranda, the victory held a deeper meaning. She wanted to inspire the young girls in her classes and show them that mixed martial arts is not just a sport for men. She wanted to demonstrate that with dedication and commitment, anyone can succeed, even after starting a family.

"It was a lot to carry. I’m an instructor here, and I wanted to show my team and all of my people that you can still do it. But as a lady, you can still stand up and do all of those things even after you’ve had kids and after you’ve been married and all that stuff," said Meranda Matthews.

Looking ahead, both Meranda and Dustin are excited about the future and hope to return to England next year to bring home more accolades for the USA.
